Korea announced the establishment of the Intel Korea Research and
Development Center in Seoul. The center focuses on innovating advanced
wireless communications technology, high-quality media coding,
and next-generation
platforms for content
distribution and consumption. It will provide an environment for
the technology industry, government, research institutes, and Intel
to collaborate on new technologies, solutions, and standards that
accelerate the adoption and integration of technology for consumers.
"Digital
technology and the rapid
expansion of digital content is changing how people experience
entertainment and personal content within the home," said Pat
Gelsinger, Intel vice president and chief technology officer.
"The Korea R&D center provides a great opportunity for
companies and industry to develop exciting new experiences and
interoperable products for the worldwide marketplace."
Fostering
Collaboration
While in Seoul, Gelsinger also signed a memorandum of understanding
with ETRI's Chu-Hwan Yim. Intel and ETRI have agreed to jointly
develop new technologies related to multistream media distribution
over home networks, home automation, and next-generation home
servers.
The Intel Korea R&D Center will
foster collaboration among a variety of contributors, including the
Ministry of Information and Communication, ETRI and Korea's
technology industry. "Korea's world-leading broadband and
wireless adoption, the government's strong commitment to policies
that support the rapid deployment of new communication technologies,
and experienced researchers in consumer electronics make Korea a
great place for Intel to develop technologies and solutions that
will support the convergence of computing and communications,"
said Gelsinger.
The center plans to work with the
technology industry on next-generation wireless communications
technologies, such as ultra
wideband technology, and with the Korean government on spectrum
reform issues, holding rapid deployment of new wireless
technologies as the goal.
K.S. Lee is the first director of the
Intel Korea R&D Center. Before joining Intel, Lee worked at
Samsung Electronics in their Digital Media Network businesses.
