Competition in Wireless Home Networking |
| Technologies focusing on networking home
entertainment equipment will see much competition in the next five
years, but 802.11n will become the ultimate leader. Of the three
leading candidates for wireless home networking, powerline, WiFi,
and Ultra Wide Band, the biggest competition will be between WiFi
and UWB. While the official data transmission rate of 802.11
technologies is 54 Mbps, throughput is actually only half that due
to communications overhead. The UWB can offer theoretical speeds of
up to 480 Mbps, but the first generation chipsets that will be
available in 2007 will only offer 100-200 Mbps without overhead
taken into account. |
